Bath / Jane Austen Territory

February 4th, 2007

This post is out of order.. I have been lazy and not added our travels to Glasonbury and Stonehenge. They should be ready in a couple of days. Stay tuned - Leevi

Once we had finished investigating West Kennet Long Barrow we were only a short drive away from our last destination Bath. Leevi and I where lucky, for Christmas Mel and Hayley gave us a voucher for a nights accommodation at a beautiful B&B.

So our plan was to drive into town find a Tourist Information Centre and from there we would get our directions to take us to our accommodation. Now this sounds easy but in the past we have come across several instances we have driven around the city centre 100 times but not this time.

It was an easy drive to Bath’s outskirts and we where greeted immediately greeted with the beautiful famous sandstone buildings. After a carefree drive into town, finding a car park stright away and a short walk to the Tourist Info Centre we quickly located the B&B just around the corner. To easy!

Our B&B was a beautiful Georgian town house only 2 min walk from the city centre. The owner was kind enough to put Leevi and i in the best room in the house. Being a typical Georgian house our room was located right up the top of the house, thank goodness we only had one bag to carry up the three flights. It all paid off to have to views of the city from our bedroom.

So after a refreshing hot shower, washed hair and clean clothes we headed back into town. It was a lovely short walk over the famous Putney Bridge and into the town centre. After a night walk around town our tummies where starting to rumble so we found our selves tucking into a delicious moroccan meal. Then heading back full, tired and ready for another early day.

Our last South England tour day started fabulously with an organic breakfast, free car parking and best off all a clear sunny day. So back into town to join a FREE tour of Bath. I had mentioned to Leevi earlier that i bet most of the people joining us on the tour would be Aussie’s as it was free and with the exchange rate we are all poor. I was right. The tour started out the front of the Roman Pump Room in front of the amazing Bath Abbey. The guides where mostly retired people who where passionate about their beautiful city.

The tour was all walking and went for over 2 hours but we enjoyed every step. Along our tour we saw the smaller hot Bath that was used by Royality back in the day. We also ventured up to famous Georgian architecture The Circus. These buildings where called The Circus beacuse Circus means circle in Latin so as you can guess the buildings are designed to make one huge circle. On the way to the Circus we walked up the well know Gravel Path which Jane Austen mentions in her novel Sense and Sensibility. Here i took several pics for dad.

After 2 hours of walking, talking, eating and taking photo’s we ended back out the front of the Roman Baths. We both had been looking forward to seeing the Baths first hand all day. These Roman Baths is one of the best preserved Bath’s in the world and it is Heritage listed site - I was in heaven. To actually get to the bath we got to see many Roman artifacts along the way. So armed with our electronic guides we saw and heard information about ancient head stones, sacrifical alters, Roman statues and the steam rooms before we got to the Bath. What a sight to see, the hot water was is still running into the Baths today. The water has an green hue due to the old pipes and algae yet it looked amazing. The Baths where surrounded by Roman warrior statues. It was amazing experience to see this grade 1 listed heritage sight in the flesh, i would recomend the Roman Baths to anyone.

So we ended our last leg of the Southern England Tour and after a short 2 hour drive we where back in the Midlands. The heart of England our home.
